How to record a band rehearsal on a Mac

You record a band rehearsal on a Mac either as one stereo file (the PA mixer's REC out, or a stereo room mic pair, into a 2-input USB interface) or as a multitrack session through an interface with 4 to 8 inputs into a DAW. Should you record a rehearsal in stereo or multitrack?

Decide by what the recording is for. To hear whether the bridge works, whether the drummer rushes, and to send a rough to the singer, a single stereo file is right: one device, one take, nothing to mix, and it plays on a phone. To produce a track you will release, you need each instrument on its own channel so you can balance and edit later, which means a multi-input interface, a DAW session, and an hour of mixing per song.

If the band plays through a PA with a mixer, take the mixer's REC OUT, a spare stereo AUX, or the MAIN out into two line inputs of the interface. That gives you what the mixer sees: vocals and anything else miked or DI'd, at a controlled level. How do you set levels for a loud band?

A rehearsal room is louder than you think and a snare hit peaks far above the average. Set gain during the loudest song, not during the sound check chat.

  1. Have the band play the loudest section for 30 seconds.
  2. Raise each preamp until the interface's clip indicator flickers, then back off so it never lights again; peaks should end up around -6 dBFS in the recorder.
  3. For a mixer feed, set the interface line input (if it has gain) or the mixer's REC or AUX level, never the main fader that feeds the PA.
  4. Record 24-bit. With 24-bit you can sit peaks at -12 dBFS and still have a clean file to normalize; 16-bit at that level leaves far less margin.

What do you need to record a rehearsal multitrack on a Mac?

One interface with enough inputs, a DAW, and the same sample rate everywhere. Count inputs before buying: kick, snare, two overheads, bass DI, guitar amp mic, vocal is seven, so a 4-input box already forces submixing. Two cheaper interfaces can be combined in Audio MIDI Setup as an aggregate device, but Apple's guide notes that "All devices in the aggregate device need to have the same sample rate" and that drift correction (resampling) is required for devices without hardware sync; a single 8-input interface avoids that and is more reliable for a two hour session. Disk space scales with channels: a stereo 24-bit 48 kHz file is 16.5 MB per minute on the author's Mac, so eight channels are roughly four times that, about 4 GB per hour. A two hour rehearsal multitracked is 8 GB; keep 20 GB free.

The DAW records each input to its own track and saves a project. A simple recorder that captures "all channels" of the interface gives you one multichannel file instead, which you can import into a DAW later; that is fine for archiving but less convenient than a session.
