How to record audio from a browser tab on a Mac
Tested on macOS 26.4.1 (Tahoe), Apple M3 Max, 3 Sept 2026. Updated 2026-09-03.
Record audio from Safari, Chrome or any browser on a Mac with a system audio recorder built on Apple's ScreenCaptureKit (macOS 13 or newer), no virtual driver required. macOS filters capture by app, not by tab, so a "tab only" recording means one tab playing and everything else muted. AirCheck ($39) then gives you that tab as WAV or MP3 with one button, speakers on, no length limit, and stall recovery into the same file.
How do I record audio from Safari or Chrome on a Mac?
The browser does not matter. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Arc and Edge all hand their sound to Core Audio, and a system audio recorder picks it up there. Tested sequence on macOS 26.4.1:
- Open the page you want to record and pause it at the start.
- Mute or close every other tab that can play sound, including background music players and pinned chat tabs.
- Open your recorder and choose the System Audio source. Approve the Screen & System Audio Recording permission the first time.
- Press record, then press play in the browser. Stop the recorder when the page finishes.
With AirCheck the file appears in ~/Music/AirCheck as 24-bit 48 kHz WAV (about 16.5 MB per minute) or MP3 320 kbps (2.4 MB per minute). The recorder captures the browser's decoded output, so a 128 kbps stream still comes out as a 128 kbps-quality signal; the WAV just stores it losslessly. Can you record just one tab and not the whole browser?
Not at the operating-system level. Apple's SCContentFilter lets a recorder include or exclude applications and windows ("Creates a filter that captures a display, including only windows of the specified apps"), and Core Audio process taps work per process. A browser tab is neither. Every tab in Chrome or Safari ends up in the same mixed output of that app, so a per-app recorder records all of that browser's tabs together.
Two practical ways to get a clean single-tab recording:
- One tab plays. Mute everything else in the browser (right-click a tab and choose Mute Site or Mute Tab). Then whole-system or per-app capture gives you only that tab. This is the route that works with AirCheck.
- Two browsers. Play the source in a browser you use for nothing else (say Safari), keep your normal browsing in Chrome, and record only Safari with a per-app recorder such as Piezo ($29) or Audio Hijack ($69). Chrome's sounds never enter the file.

Why does my browser recording have no sound or silent parts?
Four causes account for almost every silent browser recording, and each has a different fix.
- DRM playback. Netflix, Apple TV+ and some Apple Music content played in Safari can come through ScreenCaptureKit as silence. This is a platform protection, not a bug in the recorder, and no setting turns it off. See Netflix and Apple TV audio.
- The tab is muted. A muted tab produces no output, so there is nothing to capture. Unmute the tab, not just the Mac.
- Permission not granted. If the recorder was never toggled on under Screen & System Audio Recording, the file is empty. Fix it in System Settings, then restart the recorder.
- Audio stalled. A stream that rebuffers produces gaps. AirCheck's watchdog checks every 2 seconds and, if no audio buffer arrives for 5 seconds, restarts capture into the same file, so a stalled tab does not end the take.
Unwanted extra sound (a Slack ping, a mail chime) is the opposite problem. Turn on a Focus mode before recording, or use a per-app recorder.
Tab only or whole system: which should you use?
Choose by what else is making noise while you record, and by whether you want an audio file or a video at the end.
- Nothing else is playing: whole-system capture. It is the simplest setup and costs nothing extra in permissions or drivers.
- You must keep a call or music running: per-app capture of the browser. Piezo does one app at a time for $29; Audio Hijack does several sources with mixing for $69, and demands a session built from blocks first.
- You want a video of the tab: OBS Studio (free) with a window capture plus macOS audio capture, at the cost of a video container.

No macOS method captures a single tab; the OS filters by application or process.

Questions people ask
How to record tab audio on Mac?
Mute every other tab, choose System Audio in a ScreenCaptureKit recorder, and press record before you press play. macOS cannot isolate one tab by itself, so silence is the isolation.
How to screen record on Mac with audio from browser?
The built-in Screenshot toolbar records the microphone only. Use OBS Studio, which adds a macOS audio capture source on macOS 13 or newer, and select the browser window as the video source.
How to record audio on Mac from a website without BlackHole?
On macOS 13 or newer any recorder built on ScreenCaptureKit captures website audio directly. BlackHole is only needed on macOS 12 and older, or with apps like Audacity that can record inputs only.
Does recording a browser tab capture the audio at full quality?
It captures the decoded output at 48 kHz stereo, which is the ceiling of what the browser produced. A compressed stream does not gain quality, but nothing is lost after decoding.
