How to record a Google Meet on a Mac without being the host

Google Meet's built-in recorder needs a Google Workspace edition or Google One plan that includes it, and participants can only record if the host allows it. If you are not the host, or on a free account, you record locally instead: the Screenshot toolbar, OBS for video with desktop audio, or AirCheck ($39) for a 24-bit audio file with no host permission, no paid plan, no video container, no driver, no length limit. None of these local routes notifies participants.
Can you record a Google Meet on a Mac if you are not the host?
Not with Meet's own button, unless the host allows it. Google's help page sets three conditions. First, the account must be on one of the editions that can record: Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Enterprise Essentials, or a Google One subscription with 2 TB or more. Free personal accounts are not on that list. Second, "Participants can only record a meeting if the host has permission to record." Third, a participant from the host's organization can record only when Host Management is off. When a recording does run, "Participants get a notification when the recording starts or stops," the file lands in the organizer's Google Drive, and it stops automatically after 8 hours. So the Meet record button is a host-controlled, organization-controlled, paid feature. If it is greyed out or missing for you, that is by design, not a bug, and no setting on your Mac changes it.
How do you record Google Meet on a Mac with audio for free?
Two free tools capture a Meet running in your browser, with different results:
- Screenshot toolbar. Shift-Command-5, Record Selected Portion over the Chrome or Safari window, Options > Microphone. Apple's option list has no system audio entry, so the file contains your mic and only a speaker-bleed copy of the other participants. Output:

QuickTime's audio recording captures the microphone only, and Audacity cannot capture system audio on macOS without a virtual driver such as BlackHole, which needs Audio MIDI Setup work and silences your speakers unless you build a Multi-Output Device. For a plain audio file of the meeting, the free path is OBS and then extracting the audio track.
How do you record just the audio of a Google Meet as a participant?
Capture the system audio. Meet in Chrome or Safari plays through Core Audio like any tab, and ScreenCaptureKit captures it normally on macOS 14 or newer. With AirCheck:
- Join the Meet in the browser and check that you hear the others.
- In AirCheck choose System Audio, approve Screen & System Audio Recording once, press Record.
- Stop at the end; pick WAV 16-bit, WAV 24-bit or MP3 320 kbps as the export.
The file is captured at 48 kHz, 24-bit and lands in ~/Music/AirCheck. A one-hour meeting is 0.14 GB as MP3 or 0.97 GB as 24-bit WAV, measured on the author's Mac. Why is the record button missing in Google Meet on my Mac?
Check these in order:
- Edition. Your account is not on a Workspace edition that records, or it is a free Gmail account.
- Host permission. The host has not enabled recording for participants, or Host Management is on and you are not a host.
- Organization. You are joining from outside the host's organization.
None of these is fixable from your side; ask the host to record or to promote you. For the local route, the failure modes are on the Mac: the Screen & System Audio Recording permission was declined (the capture cannot start), the meeting audio is routed to a Bluetooth headset with a stalled stream (AirCheck restarts capture into the same file after 5 seconds of silence and shows "Audio input stalled, reconnecting"), or you started recording before joining and the file begins with the waiting-room tone. Trim that in any editor.
Does the host get notified if you record a Google Meet locally?
No. Google's notification fires only for Meet's own recorder. A screen recording, OBS, or a system audio capture on your Mac is invisible to Google and to the other participants. That is exactly why you should announce it. Depending on where the participants sit, recording without consent can be a criminal offence: Germany's criminal code covers recording another person's non-public spoken word without authorisation, Austria's covers using a recording device on utterances not meant for you, and several US states require all parties to agree. Meet's built-in recorder is the only row that notifies participants automatically.
