How to record a Teams meeting on a Mac

You can record a Microsoft Teams meeting on a Mac with the Start recording command only if your account has a qualifying Microsoft 365 license, an IT admin has enabled recording, and you are not a guest or from another organization. The recording is saved to the organizer's OneDrive or SharePoint, not on your Mac. If the button is missing, a local system audio recorder such as AirCheck captures the other participants' audio in a 24-bit file.
Can you record a Teams meeting on a Mac?
Yes, if three conditions hold at once. Microsoft's support page says anyone can start or stop a recording if the meeting organizer's cloud recording policy is on and the person has one of the listed licenses (Office 365 E1, E3, E5, F3, A1, A3, A5, Microsoft 365 Business, Business Premium or Business Essentials), "Has recording enabled by an IT admin" and "Isn't a guest or from another organization." External participants cannot record meetings; federated external users can record calls but not meetings. When a recording starts, "All meeting participants will receive a notification in their Teams desktop, web, or mobile app." The Mac client behaves like the Windows one here: it is the tenant policy, not the operating system, that decides. If you see no Start recording entry under More, you are outside the policy, and nothing in macOS changes that.
Where do Teams recordings go on a Mac?
Not on the Mac. Teams has no local recording mode. Microsoft states that "The recording is processed and saved in the meeting organizer's OneDrive for Business" and that Teams meeting recordings are stored in either OneDrive for work or school or SharePoint. That has three practical consequences on a Mac:
- Searching
~/Documentsor~/Moviesfinds nothing; open the meeting chat in Teams or the organizer's OneDrive in a browser. - The organizer's tenant owns retention and sharing. A participant who leaves the organization may lose access.
- If you need a file on disk, download it from OneDrive after processing, which can take a while after the meeting ends.

How do you record a Teams meeting on a Mac with audio when the button is missing?
Record the Mac's system audio. Teams, whether the desktop app or the browser version, plays through Core Audio, and ScreenCaptureKit captures that output on macOS 14 or newer without a virtual driver. With AirCheck:
- Join the meeting and confirm you hear the others.

- Stop when the meeting ends and export as WAV or 320 kbps MP3.

Why is my Teams recording missing, silent or not allowed?
- Start recording is greyed out. Policy off, license missing, or you joined as a guest or from another tenant. Only the organizer's admin can change that.
- Recording started but you cannot find it. It is in the organizer's OneDrive or SharePoint, linked from the meeting chat, and it appears after processing.
- Screenshot toolbar recording has no meeting audio. Apple's Shift-Command-5 options are Save to, Timer and Microphone; there is no system audio entry, so the other participants are heard only through speaker bleed, and not at all with headphones.
- System audio capture is silent. The Screen & System Audio Recording permission was declined; enable it in Privacy & Security and relaunch. If Teams audio stalls mid-meeting, AirCheck's watchdog restarts capture into the same file after 5 seconds without buffers.
- Long all-hands meetings. The longest real AirCheck take in the author's library is 2 h 5 min; there is no length limit, only disk space.
Should you record a Teams meeting without telling people?
No. Teams' own recorder notifies every participant, and a local capture does not, which is precisely why you should say it out loud and in the chat first. Many employers also regulate recording in their IT policy, and the criminal law on recording conversations differs by country: Germany penalises recording another person's non-public spoken word without authorisation, the UK's Investigatory Powers Act treats interception as authorised where sender and recipient have both consented, and US rules vary by state. Questions people ask
Where do Teams recordings go on a MacBook?
To the organizer's OneDrive for Business, or to SharePoint for channel meetings, according to Microsoft. Nothing is written to the MacBook itself. Open the meeting chat in Teams to find the link, then download if you want a local copy.
Can I screen record a Teams meeting on my Mac?
Yes, with Shift-Command-5, but the built-in Screenshot toolbar records only your microphone, not the meeting audio. Other people are heard only through speaker bleed. Use OBS for video with desktop audio, or a system audio recorder for sound alone.
Can a guest record a Teams meeting?
No. Microsoft lists "Isn't a guest or from another organization" as a condition for starting a recording, and states that external participants cannot record meetings. A guest can only capture locally on their own machine.
Does Teams tell people if I record locally?
No. The Teams notification fires only for the Teams recorder. A local capture with OBS, the Screenshot toolbar or AirCheck is invisible to Teams, so you have to announce it yourself.
